米国出身、日本在住の写真家ロショーン・スティーヴンソン氏による初となるモノクロ写真集「Nuancez」が刊行された。白黒の縞模様を背景にタイトルが大きく冠されたインパクトある表紙は、私たちがオーソドックスな「写真集」に対して持つイメージを良い意味でも裏切ってくれる。表紙を捲ると、そこには目の覚めるような鮮烈な赤い見返しに浮かび上がる序文から始まり、48ページにわたる重厚かつ繊細なモノクロームの世界が幕を開ける。
“Nuancez,” the first monochrome photo book by Roshaun Stephenson, a photographer from the United States residing in Japan, has been published. Its striking cover, featuring the title prominently set against a backdrop of black and white stripes, pleasantly defies our orthodox expectations of a ‘photo book.’ As you open the cover, you are greeted with an eye-catching, vivid red endpaper that leads into a rich and delicate monochrome world spanning 48 pages.
ニュアンス
モノクロ写真の世界において、ニュアンスとは色が取り除かれた時に見えてくる微妙なディテールや優しい変化を指す。それは光と影の繊細な相互作用を表し、観る者に写真に見出される複雑な美しさを探求するように誘う。
「ニュアンス」は思索を促し、グレースケールのパレットで現れる物語の囁きや繊細な感情を明らかにする。本質的に、写真におけるニュアンスとは、しばしば見落とされがちな微細な特徴を見つけて捉えることであり、それはイメージに意味という層を加えるものである。これは観察力を高め、光と構成を理解し、主題の本質を明らかにする技術である。それは、明示されているものを超越し、主題の本質を伝えるということにほかならない。

Nuances
In the world of black and white photography, nuances are the subtle details and gentle variations that become visible when color is removed. They represent the delicate interplay of light and shadow, inviting viewers to explore the intricate beauty found in each photograph. “Nuances’’ encourages contemplation, revealing the whispered stories and nuanced emotions that emerge in a grayscale palette.
In essence, nuance in photography is about seeing and capturing the often-overlooked subtleties that add layers of meaning to an image. It’s a skill that involves a heightened sense of observation, an understanding of light and composition, and a dedication to conveying the essence of a subject in a way that goes beyond the obvious.

氏の捉えるイメージは、ふとした日常の中に蠢く非日常を浮かび上がらせているようでもあり、それは時に夢幻的でありながら叙情的で、私たちの無意識に直接働きかけてくるようにも感じられるのである。
Mr. Stephenson’s images seem to unearth the extraordinary within the mundane moments of daily life. At times dreamlike yet lyrical, they seem to speak directly to our subconscious.
そして、黒とグレイのダブルトーン印刷による強烈な暗部の漆黒とその深淵から仄かに浮かび上がる繊細なディテールは、私たちををより深く光と影の世界の探求に没入させてくれる。
The intense blacks and the nuanced shades of gray achieved through the double-tone black and gray printing immerse us deeper into the exploration of light and shadow.
写真集「Nuancez」は、時間をかけてゆっくりとインキが乾燥し、紙の表面に馴染んでいく昔ながらの油性オフセット印刷で仕上げられている。油性印刷特有の艶やかなグロス感は、写真集の荘厳な世界観をさらに際立たせているようにも見える。
そして、仄かなディテールを損なわない限界値まで盛り込まれたかのようなインキ量と手触り。この圧倒的な実体感と臨場感を、ぜひ手に取って確かめてもらいたい。
“Nuancez” has been produced using traditional oil-based offset printing, allowing the ink to slowly dry and integrate with the paper’s surface. The unique glossy quality of the oil-based printing further accentuates the solemn world of the photo book.The carefully balanced amount of ink and texture preserves the subtle details, offering a palpable sense of reality and presence, best appreciated when the book is held and felt in hand.
